Harm reduction programme introduced to help drug users

The morning sessions also play a big role on the road to recovery.

A non-profit organisation in Mamelodi is using sports to keep drug and substance abusers busy.

Kate Kekana, of the Thandanani Drop Inn Centre Narcotics Anonymous programme, said the sports programme was introduced to prevent its members from using again.

She said since the narcotics programme introduced a harm reduction programme, the abusers have realised that they have skills, talent and they are energetic.

“This is part of the drug addict recovery programme to assist users reclaim their lives and we have introduced sport to keep them busy after sessions in the morning at the centre.

“Beneficiaries attend 10 sessions in the morning and have breakfast before they move away from the centre and they are expected to come back for lunch,” said Kekana.

She said the sports programme keeps them busy and prevents them from using it again while waiting for lunch.

The morning sessions play a big role on the road to recovery and are ongoing.

She said the centre is working closely with correctional services on dissuading the members from a life of crime by taking them on prison tours to see first-hand what prison is like.

“The narcotics programme was introduced in 2019 to assist our brothers and sisters reclaim their lives and reunite with their families,” she said add.

“We do not judge people and our doors are always open for everyone.

“The programme does not only help addicts but also the community as a whole because it is also affected by what their loved ones are going through.

“The centre is proud of these guys who took a step to change their lives.

“We encourage others to join us and reclaim their lives; most of them have great talents and this is an opportunity for them to fulfil their dreams too.

“The centre will stop at nothing to make sure that we have a drug-free community.”

Anyone who wishes to reclaim their life is advised to visit the Thandanani offices in Mamelodi East next to the Rethabile community hall from Mondays to Fridays.
