VIDEO: Efficient rail network in the works for Limpopo, Gauteng
According to the premiers of the two provinces, financial institutions have already shown interest in funding the project.
A new rail network is in the works to link Gauteng and Limpopo.
Once fully operational, the Limpopo-to-Gauteng rail link will alleviate the traffic congestion usually witnessed between the two provinces annually.
At the end of Easter weekend (April 10) the Pumlani Plaza experienced the highest volume of vehicles between 17:00 and 18:00 at 3 244 into Gauteng, according to Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga.
Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi said he was in discussion with the Limpopo government to formally start the process to link Gauteng and Limpopo through a new, faster and efficient rail network.
He said the new network would ensure less road congestion by creating an option to distribute goods on rail, while also creating a commuter network.
“This is a huge economic benefit and there is a need for this project.
“Once fully operational, the Limpopo-to-Gauteng rail link will alleviate the traffic congestion between the two provinces, especially during Easter and festive holidays. The project will also stimulate economic growth,” said Lesufi.
Lesufi said the network would transport commodities for regional and domestic markets as well as people.
“A joint technical team comprising senior officials from the two provincial governments, and the Gautrain management agency will meet regularly to discuss the modalities of the project.
“Financial institutions have already shown interest in funding the project.”

Limpopo premier Chupu Stanley Mathabatha said: “I wish to thank the premier of Gauteng for this initiative. As Limpopo, we have been trying to implement this project since 2014 and unfortunately, we were met with financial challenges.
“I think with the kind of enthusiasm that Lesufi is bringing into the project, it will finally kick-off.”
Lesufi first hinted at a rail line that would service the two provinces in February during his state of the province address.
