“Anyone near the explosion could suffer fatal burns, serious injuries, or both from the pressure wave and heat produced by such an explosion.

“The chemicals and gases released during a fire or explosion can also kill people, animals, and birds in addition to causing long-term environmental impact.”

Arrive Alive said poor maintenance was one of the reasons that a car can catch fire. Other causes include the impact of car crashes, electrical problems, leaking fluids, leaky fuel systems and overheated engines.

Here are some general recommendations for treating those who have suffered severe injuries:

– Call for emergency medical assistance immediately.

– Check for responsiveness and pulse. If the person is not responsive, begin CPR if you have been properly trained.

– Assess the injuries and provide first aid accordingly. The injuries caused by a boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion can range from burns to traumatic injuries, so it is important to evaluate the person’s condition and provide appropriate care.

– For traumatic injuries, such as fractures or dislocations, immobilise the affected area to prevent further injury.

– If there is the possibility of a person having inhaled A harmful substance, quickly move the person to a location with fresh air and monitor their breathing.

– Beware of possible toxic gas or chemical exposure and take appropriate safety measures to protect yourself and the patient.

– If you can smell any chemicals, you are too close to the source and you, and your patients, need to be evacuated as a matter of utmost urgency, even before any fire starts.

Residents who experience accidents involving propane or butane gas should call 10177, 10111, 084 124, or 112 immediately to alert emergency responders to the situation.

When making the call, the dispatchers will need the address to ensure that the appropriate response is deployed to the scene of the accident.
