SA Weather Services issues alert warning level 2

“Thunderstorms are moving in over the west rand region of Gauteng moving slowly eastwards resulting in excessive lightning and heavy downpours”.

The South African Weather Services issued a yellow level 2 warning on Monday afternoon.

“Thunderstorms are moving in over the west rand region of Gauteng moving slowly eastwards resulting with excessive lightning, heavy downpours and there is the possibility of strong winds and hail,” the agency said.

The service has also warned residents of the possibility of localised flooding of low-lying roads and areas, and power surges due to lightning. This may also cause poor driving visibility due to heavy rainfall and hail.

According to the institution, this may result in strong winds and isolated incidents of trees being uprooted.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said in case of flooding there are measures in place.
These included the monitoring of known hotspots.

Its flood incident management plan also allows for the identification of areas, communities and households at risk. This will enable a coordinated and integrated approach by the department.

Meanwhile, the weather service said wind speed for Tuesday will be from 9km/h 5 knots to 9km/h 5 knots as well with a minimum temperature of 12°C to a maximum of 20°C.

The possibility of rain on Tuesday is, however, lower than that of Monday with a 30% chance of rain.

Over the coming weekend, the weather services said the province would be partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Below are safety tips on how to stay safe during wet weather conditions:

– Slow down when the road is wet. Avoid slamming on the brakes as this may cause the car to slide.

– Be prepared to move to the left shoulder in case of badly-timed overtaking from the opposite direction.

Don’t panic when you see oil patches. Slow down gradually and steer through them.

– Approach bends in the road with caution with both hands on the steering wheel.

– Increase your safety cushion by doubling your following distance from three to six seconds.

– Turn on your headlights.

– Be mindful of other vehicles behind you as they are difficult to see through rain-spattered windows.

– Be extra careful within the first thirty minutes after the rain has started as grime and oil on the road surface mix with water and could cause the road to be slippery.
