Akasia police on high alert after failed kidnapping
“School children should refrain from walking alone to and from school, not talk to strangers, not ask for lifts and inform their parents of any incidents they may witness that are suspicious,” says Constable Lindiwe Mabasa.

The attempted kidnapping of a young school girl has the Akasia police on high alert.
Police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mabasa said parents should take extra precautions to safeguard their children.
Police would not disclose the name of the school.
Mabasa said one learner was allegedly attacked on her way to school.
“The parent reported to police that he was at work when he received a call from his daughter’s friend informing him that his daughter had just been attacked by unknown perpetrators on her way to school.”
Mabasa said the father told police that the attack on his daughter was a kidnapping attempt.
“The father rushed to school where a teacher explained that the child had told them that men driving a white car tried to kidnap her.
She fought back and another motorist who was passing by came to her rescue.
“The perpetrators, upon seeing the other car stopping, pushed her out of the vehicle and she fell onto the ground and got injured,” Mabasa said.
“The police have since been investigating a case of attempted kidnapping and wish to sensitise the community to be aware of this new scourge before it rises to high numbers especially now that it is winter and the mornings are darker.”
She urged school children to walk in groups.
“School children should refrain from walking alone to and from school, not talk to strangers, not ask for lifts and inform their parents of any incidents they may witness that are suspicious,” Mabasa said.
“Parents are further urged to seek school transportation and validate the drivers that will be responsible for transporting their children to and from school.”
Mabasa further urged community members with information to come forward or contact the police station on 012 564 0700.
Alternatively they can call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 and remain anonymous should they so wish.
