Mabopane community celebrates Mother’s Day

“It is very rare to see mothers abandon their children and this shows us that they are always there to protect us,” says Mavis Mphela.

Community members in Mabopane Block B came together on Saturday to celebrate Mother’s Day.

The event, organised particularly for older women of the community, was aimed at promoting unity and celebration of motherhood.

The community came together and donated funds from each house on the block to make the event possible.

A similar, community-funded fun walk was hosted in November of last year.

Different meals were cooked to cater for the older women.

The organisers made sure that the event was inclusive by inviting all mothers regardless of marital status or other criteria.

The event was a grand success with all mothers feeling appreciated and loved.

“We encountered several challenges when obtaining money for the event,” said one of the organisers, Shelly Mosheshe.

An attendee, Mavis Mphela said that it was important to celebrate Mother’s Day because “these people are playing a huge part in raising us to be the kinds of people that we are”.

“It is very rare to see mothers abandon their children and this shows us that they are always there to protect us,” she said.
