Central resident to represent South Africa at global Miss Heritage

The 20-year-old Arcadia resident was crowned Miss Heritage SA earlier this month on May 4 and says that she hopes her victory inspires others from her hometown.

Newly crowned Miss Heritage South Africa, Busisiwe Radebe says she is ready to represent her country at the International competition coming up this September.

The 20-year-old Arcadia resident was crowned Miss Heritage SA earlier this month on May 4 and says that she hopes her victory inspires others in her hometown.

“I hope that it would be an eye-opener to others. People from where I’m from don’t know or haven’t met anyone in a situation similar to theirs that has made it out of it. I’m familiar with a lot of people there so when they see me hopefully they’ll believe ‘if Busi can do it then I can’,” Radebe says.

Radebe is originally from Limpopo, she moved to Hammanskraal during Grade 4 and has been a Pretoria resident since, currently residing in Arcadia, Central Pretoria and completing her second year media studies course via Boston City Campus.

“Growing up people around me used to smoke nyaope, drink, party all the time, fall pregnant and all sorts of other things that I simply wasn’t interested in. I kept to myself a lot and discovered a love for media because you can record a video at home and that’s when I realised that I enjoy being on camera, making content, filming and different sorts of media,” Radebe continues.

Busisiwe previously attended Klipdrift primary school then Prestige high school and started doing pageants last year after discovering the platform during her first year of studying.

She says opportunities of that kind weren’t available back home.

“It was either netball or soccer that was offered as serious activities to engage in when I was growing up.

It was only when I went to varsity that I started discovering things like modelling and pageant work, so it opened my eyes to things that weren’t previously available.”

MISS HERITAGE THE DJ

In her spare time, Radebe enjoys dancing, listening to music, drawing and being on the 1s and 2s as she also goes by the name DJ Loner.

The name was inspired by her time growing up and feeling alienated from those around her.

“I always felt lonely, you know. I used to spend a lot of time in the room, I didn’t go out much or have many friends. Just because I went to a private school or my family was an average household, people would look at me like ‘Oh, that’s the rich kid’. They would throw parties and not invite me, and things like that so I embraced it, I was okay with always being alone and taking that discrimination.”

DJ Loner aims to continue to pursue a career in the industry after finishing her studies, as well as open an acting agency for local talent, start her own TV show, own property, and if all goes to plan, launch her clothing brand next year.

Maropeng Matshaba, creative director at Miss Heritage South Africa ,says he is confident that Busiswe will shine in the upcoming international competition.

“Busisiwe Radebe is a beautiful unique queen with an interesting story to tell. I believe that she can easily capture the international crown and be the second Miss Heritage Global from South Africa. She is set for greater things and I know that she’ll have a beautiful reign and future endeavours,” Matshaba states.

MISS HERITAGE PAGEANT STARTED IN 2013

The Miss Heritage pageant started in 2013 and has so far done seven events and two handpicks.

Participants enter by completing an online form and paying the application fee, then they go through a series of challenges and the winner is chosen at the coronation.

Applicants must be authentic and charming, have a story to tell to inspire others, be unmarried and must not have children.

As the winner, Busisiwe’s prizes included cash from the organisation, a weekend getaway from Travel Marine, a scholarship from Boston City Campus, a crown from Ndalo Jewellers, a supply of tea from Laager brands, and garments from Simply Mooi and Vicsion for her reign as well as a sponsored trip to represent the country at Miss Heritage Global Pageant.

The international pageant will take place in September at Kalahari Waterfront Nandoni in Limpopo.

More than 50 countries including the likes of Indonesia, the USA, Vietnam, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Malawi will participate.

Busisiwe says that she’s nervous but ready to represent her country.

“I feel nervous also because I’m pretty young, a lot of the contestants that I’m going up against are older and have a lot more experience not just in pageants but in life as well. But I won’t let that deter me, I believe in myself and I’m confident that I’ll get the title, I plan on rising to the occasion when the time comes, it’s a huge challenge but I’m very excited.”

Busisiwe appeals to residents to show their love and support for her campaign – local sponsors and those with pageant or modelling experience are also urged to reach out.
