Community comes together for homeless

"Homeless people will be given the opportunity to line up at the store and choose the clothes they need in a dignified way."

Moot residents will once again be reaching out to the homeless and needy in this year’s instalment of The Street Store on May 27.

The long-awaited event will once again take place at Capital Park community centre from 07:00 to 12:00.

Last year proved that the concept works and organisers Christ for Moot, were pleased with how the day went and hope to repeat the success later this month.

“The Street Store is a pop-up clothing store set up to provide for the clothing needs of the homeless,” Christ for Moot chairperson, Japie Venter.

NO CHARGE FOR THE HOMELESS

“Homeless people will be given the opportunity to line up at the store and choose the clothes they need at no charge.

“Another objective is to provide for the emotional and spiritual needs of the homeless on the day and after the event.”

The Tshwane Homeless Forum were present at last year’s street store.

“We are here to restore their dignity,” said forum chairperson Tebogo Sehwlane.

“They are getting clothes, they are getting Bibles, they are getting counselling and we hope that they can leave feeling inspired.”

PRAY FOR THE HOMELESS

Venter was very pleased with how last year turned out.

“It was great to see all the different congregations try to make a difference in our community.

“People are here to express the love of Christ and speak to the pain of our city,” he said.

“We are here to take care of the people living on the fringes of society.

“Here they are given food, they have a street store at the back where they can collect themselves a whole set of clothes and a blanket.”

Venter also expressed how happy the organiser was for the opportunity to pray for the homeless and provide them counselling.
