Metrorail spreading safety education on its network
Metrorail urged commuters to observe all safety regulations as displayed at their stations and on board the trains.
Metrorail embarked on yet another safety awareness campaign at Pretoria North station on Friday, May 19.
Gauteng Metrorail spokesperson, Lillian Mofokeng said that rail safety is a priority and must not be compromised.
“We have urged the communities and commuters in particular to observe all safety regulations as displayed at our stations and on board the rail.
“As a company, we take all necessary measures to operate and we want our commuters to have an understanding and appreciation of rail safety, hence the weekly safety campaigns,” she said.
Metrorail issued the following safety tips for commuters:
– Do not stand beyond the yellow line, too close to the platform edge.
– When crossing the railway tracks, use the overhead bridge or the subway.
– Do not to lean against a train door.
– Always arrive at the station early to avoid long queues and the train leaving you behind.
– When using the level crossing, remember that the train has a right of way. Do not try to beat the train.
– Never walk on the tracks.
– Refrain from throwing stones at trains.
She continued to say that the campaign targeted commuters on the Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa trains.
“Safety campaigns are held twice a week at selected operational stations,” Mofokeng said.
She added that the campaigns are ongoing and Metrorail is planning at least four in Gauteng every week – two each in Gauteng north and in Gauteng south.
“In Pretoria, we are busy with illegal level crossing safety activations, school safety awareness campaigns and station campaigns. This is part of company’s efforts to operate in a safer environment for both personnel and commuters.
“We work together with stakeholders such as United Commuters Voice (UCV) representing commuters, and the local community representatives to conduct educational awareness campaigns.”
She further said: “There is an ongoing rehabilitation programme to upgrade stations. Stations like Kalafong, Sportspark, Irene, Kopanong, Wintersnest and Akasiaboom are under construction.”
