Robbers target Kameeldrift farms in north conservation area
The local CPF said, while crimes like house robberies, were rare in the area, they had noticed an escalation in the past two weeks.
Kameeldrift Trauma Support recently responded to multiple robberies on farms in the Buffelsdrift conservation area.
The crimes took place on Thursday June 15, between 23:00 – 00:00.
Chris Murphy, chairman of Kameeldrift Trauma Support, said armed assailants broke into the first premises via a window.
“We were on-site to support the families who were traumatised by the severity of this attack,” Murphy states.
“It’s believed that armed robbers broke into a home on the first farm. The father, mother and child that were in the house were robbed of various possessions,” Murphy continued.
According to Murphy, a single shot was fired during the robbery following an altercation between the father and the robbers.
After the shot went off the family ran to a neighbour’s home for help, while the robbers continued to loot the house.
CRIMINALS TARGET A SECOND KAMEELDRIFT PREMISES
“The family had trouble calling the police, they had to get in the car and drive to the station itself. That’s where we were called in at around 03:00 June 16,” Murphy says.
It is believed the same group of criminals then made their way to a neighbouring farm.
The attackers tied and robbed workers on the nearby farm before fleeing.
Chairman of the Kameeldrift CPF, Petrus Nel said despite seeing a slight rise in serious crimes, efforts are being made to quell this.
“Fortunately, serious crimes like these don’t happen often in our area.”
Nel said they were working with police and the community through various engagements and patrols to ensure that cases like these came to an end.
“We have, however, especially in the last two weeks seen an escalation in these types of serious crimes.”
Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo could not be reached for comment at our time of publication.
