A professor of international law at the University of Pretoria is running for the position of judge in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Professor of international law Dire Tladi was been endorsed by the cabinet of South Africa in May 2023.
The election for the judges is scheduled to take place in November.
15 JUDGES ELECTED
The court, an invention of the United Nations sitting in the Hague in the Netherlands, comprises 15 judges elected by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council for a nine-year term.
It fulfils an important role in settling legal disputes between nations per international law and further provides authoritative advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorised United Nations organs and specialised agencies.

UP FUTURE AFRICA INSTITUTE CONGRATULATED TLADI
UP spokesperson Liesel Swart said UP Future Africa Institute congratulated Tladi on his nomination as South Africa’s candidate to serve as a judge of the ICJ, commonly known as the World Court.
“Future Africa Institute and the University of Pretoria proudly support Prof Tladi’s candidature for the International Court of Justice. His appointment would significantly contribute to the advancement of international law and the pursuit of global justice.”
“Beyond his nomination, Prof Tladi has demonstrated exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to the field of international law. He currently serves as president of the South African branch of the International Law Association and is an executive member of the International Law Association.”
Among his notable achievements, Prof Tladi leads Future Africa Research Chair in Global Equity established in March 2023 where his primary objective is to pursue multi-perspective strategies for global equity.
Tladi said: “I am deeply honoured to be nominated as South Africa’s candidate for the International Court of Justice. If elected, I will diligently fulfil my responsibilities and contribute to the Court’s mission of upholding international law and promoting global equity.”
TLADI HAS HELD SEVERAL KEY POSITIONS WITHIN THE FIELD OF INTERNATIONAL LAW
Prof Tladi has held several key positions within the field of international law, including serving as the chair of the International Law Commission, an organ of the United Nations renowned for its contributions to the International Court of Justice.
He has provided his invaluable expertise as the legal adviser to the South African mission in New York and as a special adviser to the South African foreign minister.
Tladi has published well over 100 academic publications – articles, books and chapters in books – and holds a BLC LLB (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria, an LLM from the University of Connecticut and a PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam. He was a member of the United Nations (UN) International Law Commission from 2012 to 2022.
