Water levels recovering after several reservoirs dry up, says Tshwane

Some of the areas that remain affected are reservoirs in Centurion, Mooikloof, Klapperkop, Mnandi, and Lotus Gardens “which are at critically low levels or empty”.

Tshwane says its water supply was recovering after reservoirs servicing several areas ran dry due to power failures impacting its supplier’s infrastructure.

Tshwane, on the weekend, was left dried up as it was experiencing challenges of inconsistent water supply following Rand Water’s failure to recover from several power failures and trips experienced since June.

Rand Water notified several municipalities, including Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Govan Mbeki, Victor Khanye, Thembisile Hani and Lesedi, that it was still struggling to recover water due to multiple power failures.

Rand Water’s Vereeniging and Zuikerbosch water treatment plants, as well as at the Palmiet, Eikenhof and Mapleton Booster pumping stations, were left non-operational every so often.

Tshwane, since the weekend, observed low to no water supply from Rand Water in some of its areas. However, improvements on Monday were recorded, according to spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

“Tshwane has observed an improvement in most of the reservoirs that were affected over the weekend.”

RESERVOIRS RUN EMPTY

The reservoirs servicing areas such as Garsfontein, Laudium, Atteridgeville, Murrayfield, Parkmore, Newlands, Olympus, Die Wilgers and Wapadrand were depleted since the weekend.

“The Garsfontein and Laudium reservoirs had run empty; however, they have now [July 3] recovered to 54% and 90%, respectively.”

Mashigo said some of the areas that remained affected were reservoirs in Centurion, Mooikloof, Klapperkop, Mnandi, and Lotus Gardens, “which are at critically low levels or empty”.

He urged consumers to drastically reduce water consumption. Meanwhile, Tshwane’s technical team were engaging with Rand Water for means of intervention in affected areas.

“Reduction of water consumption will enable the system to stabilise and recover.”

“The affected regions are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and parts of 5. Water tankers will be deployed to the areas experiencing challenges in water supply.

“Residents are reminded and urged to use water wisely and sparingly. Should residents fail to heed this call, the current water outages will be prolonged, resulting in more areas being affected.”
