Tips to survive the cold snap
“Residents are urged to take the necessary safety precautions to prevent any negative impacts.”
As the cold weather befell Tshwane, emergency services have again appealed to residents to keep safe during this period.
Spokesperson Charles Mabaso said it was vital that residents keep well during these conditions as the SA weather service predicted overcast and rainy conditions.
“Residents are advised to consider the risks the weather may have on livestock, the aged and the vulnerable, as well as on driving conditions.
“Residents are urged to take the necessary safety precautions to prevent any negative impacts,” said Mabaso.
He said his team would be on high alert to respond to any incident that would be reported in the coming days.
Tshwane should expect 50% of humidity together with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon with a 60% chance of rain in the evening.
According to the weather service, the minimum is expected to be 8ºC and a maximum of 20ºC.
“Today’s rain amount is expected to be 5mm with a rain probability of 30% and wind speed of 28km,” the weather service said.
Friday’s temperatures are expected to be a minimum of 7ºC and a maximum of 15ºC with a rain probability of 60% chance.
However, in the morning a 75% chance of rain showers is expected; later in the afternoon, this will reduce to 60%.
Mabaso said residents should at all times remember to adhere to the following tips during this cold snap:
– Never leave children unattended near a burning candle or fire.
– Make sure all candles are placed in a safe candleholder.
– Never connect electricity illegally.
– Never overload electrical plugs.
– Never leave a mbaola or coal fire burning overnight without supervision.
– Extinguish paraffin fires with sand or a fire extinguisher.
