Metro commits to service despite ongoing protest
Expect a delayed response to service interruptions.
The Tshwane metro has assured its residents that all complaints they have reported would be attended to, but not in the normal turnaround times.
Spokesperson Selby Bokaba said this was due to the ongoing protest action by staff.
“Tshwane would like to inform its residents and customers to expect a delayed response to service interruptions.
“The protesters are expected to deliver a memorandum at Tshwane House around 11:00 and disperse at 14:00,” Bokaba said.
He said he respected the rights of workers to protest but cautioned workers against intimidation.
“The right to march/protest is enshrined in the Constitution and the city expects the protesters to be disciplined and not engage in acts of misconduct.
“Tshwane management wishes to reiterate its plea to the protesters to respect the rights of their colleagues who opted to not participate in the march, in the same way they respect the rights of their co-workers who are participating in the march.”
Bokaba’s comments come in the wake of reports of intimidation of employees at its Rosslyn fire station, Rosslyn and Lyttleton clinics, Region 4 customer care walk-in centre and the Bronkhorstspruit licensing centre.
“All these buildings have been temporarily closed.
“A disaster operations centre (DOC) has been activated to monitor developments and respond accordingly,” added Bokaba.
The SA workers union members are expected to march to the metro headquarters to submit their memorandum of grievances.
These include the annual once-off notch payment, the lack of proper implementation of the metro police grading system and the metro’s unilateral implementation of a performance management system.
According to the metro, these interruptions began on Monday afternoon, when a Tshwane bus driver decided to immediately suspend the bus service, leaving commuters stranded.
