Lyttelton police station in top 30 for various crimes

Lyttelton featured in six crime categories nationally, while Wierdabrug and Olievenhoutbosch featured in the top 30 in the burglary at residential premises and car-jacking categories respectively.

Three of Centurion’s police stations featured in the national top 30 for various crime categories in the latest quarterly report by police minister, Bheki Cele.

The latest quarterly crime statistics include crimes reported to and detected by police from April 1 to June 30.

Lyttelton featured in the top 30 of six crime categories while Olievenhoutbosch ranked second for car hijackings, and Wierdabrug sixth for burglary at residential premises.

While Lyttelton police cover a wide area of high density, it showed increases in various crime categories.

The station recorded the third-highest number of commercial crimes in South Africa with an 18.7% increase, the highest since 2019.

It placed 11th for property-related crimes, 12th for theft not included in other categories, 18th for burglary and non-residential premises, and 30th for both theft out of motor vehicles and crimes reported by the community.

However, despite reporting the highest number of murders (3) since 2019, contact crimes and contact-related crimes decreased by 10.7% and 15.8% respectively.

The station also showed a 31.6% increase in crimes detected by police action, especially for drug-related crimes, compared to the same period last year.

Ward 57 councillor David Farquharson advised residents to become involved in their local CPF structures to help combat crime in their area.

Olievenhoutbosch, on the other hand, saw dramatic increases in almost every category, including almost 60% in car hijackings, its highest since 2019.

It reported over 400 more crimes across the categories compared to the same period last year.

Wierdabrug continued to face high rates of burglary at residential premises, with 169 cases reported, although this was only five more than last year.

The station saw a decrease in crimes detected by police action, with only 13 cases.

It also reported a high number of community-reported crimes at 1 186 cases.

Wierdabrug recorded nine kidnapping cases, its lowest since 2021.

Crime in Erasmia appeared stable, with only slight changes across all categories, including slight decreases in contact and contact-related crimes.

Theft, burglary, and robbery with aggravating circumstances were the most reported crimes in the area.

Laudium was similarly stable but showed a 30% increase in contact crimes.

It promisingly reported a 31% increase in crimes detected by police action, particularly for drug-related crimes and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
