‘Dead man’ arrested in stolen car, wife return to court soon

The couple is accused of murder, defeating the ends of justice and fraud.

A couple suspected of killing a man, and then burning his body in a house fire to fake the husband’s death, is expected back in court on September 13.

Sibusiso and Lerato Mahlangu will face murder, defeating the ends of justice and fraud charges in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court where they previously abandoned their bail application during their first appearance on June 29.

On January 2, 2022, the two murdered a man and burned his body in their house in Block HH, Soshanguve before Lerato claimed the dead man was husband Sibusiso.

“However, further investigations revealed discrepancies in her version of events,” said Lumka Mahanjana, Tshwane NPA spokesperson.

Mahanjana said that alleged insurance fraud is believed to be the motive behind the murder.

Sibusiso was arrested on April 20 in Hammanskraal in a stolen vehicle and during processing, police discovered that he was registered as deceased.

Lerato allegedly obtained a fraudulent death certificate from home affairs and later claimed against his life insurance.

The case is ongoing, and the couple’s day in court will come in September.

“The case has been postponed until September 13 to allow for further investigations to be conducted and for instructions from the director of public prosecutions (DPP) to be received,” Mahanjana said.

She said during this time, the couple will remain in custody.
