Local organisations donate sanitary pads
Millions of girls miss classes every month due to period poverty.
Different organisations have recently partnered in the donation of 175 packets of sanitary pads to girls at Central high school.
The Lebogang Manamela Foundation (LMF) said seven million South African girls are reported absent from school each month due to lack of sanitary pads, in the process missing 25% of learning during the school year.

“Many girls are without sanitary pads, a very unfortunate reality considering that a period is a natural act of the body,” said LMF founder Lebogang Manamela.
“Period poverty is a reality in South Africa. An estimated 30% of South African girls do not attend school while they are on their period because they do not have sanitary products. With the fast-increasing inflation rate and unemployment, it makes it even harder for some homes to afford sanitary products.”
Other organisations taking part in the donation were African Leadership Movement, Lyttelton SAPS, Avbob, Old Mutual, Metropolitan, Cosup, Mafulo Ga Sisulu, Khuluma family counselling, Fastrack, EMS s well as three local soccer teams.

The 175 donated packets of pads were given to learners across all grades who had been identified by the school social worker.
“A period should never stop any girl from going to school. They have the right to good hygiene. They should regain their confidence,” said Manamela.
Outside of the school outreach programmes across Tshwane, the foundation’s major events include an upcoming career expo, GBV dialogue and cancer awareness hike.
