Pretoria North organisation restores Helde Akker cemetery through massive clean-up
The clean-up of the Helde Akker cemetery entailed the removal of a significant amount of waste, cut grass, and fallen tree branches, restoring the cemetery to its former glory.
Pretoria North community organisation honoured the memory of departed renowned citizens and public figures by cleaning and restoring the Helde Akker cemetery.
Ons Sal Self will clean up the Helde Akker, cutting grass and removing a significant amount of waste, as well as fallen tree branches to restore the cemetery to its former glory.
The Helde Akker, a revered and historical section of the Church Street cemetery in Pretoria central, is a sacred space that is the final resting place of many notable figures in South African history.
This cemetery is home to the graves of Andries Pretorius, Paul Kruger, and Hendrik Verwoerd.
Ons Sal Self said this community effort reflects the organisation’s commitment to honouring the memory of those who have died and ensuring that their final resting place is clean and well-maintained.
“Our work is to be a source of comfort and gratitude for the families of those who are buried in that cemetery,” said Quintin Meyer, the chairperson of the project.
Meyer said it was sad to see the bad state of the cemetery.
“It is indeed a tragic sight to see a historical cemetery, a place of memory and remembrance, in such a state of disrepair.”

Meyer said the clean-up was a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting these sacred sites as they are part of history.
“A cemetery is a resting place, which should be always clean so that the departed loved ones can also rest in peace and dignity,” Meyer said.
Meyer said apart from honouring the departed, this all comes down to service delivery.
“As ratepayers, we are taking a stand and paving the way for future generations to be able to honour and pay their respects to the men and women buried there.”
