981 suspects arrested for various crimes during police ops in Tshwane

Throughout the week, a total of 3674 individuals and 2252 vehicles underwent thorough searches at roadblocks, resulting in the issuance of 291 Aarto fines totaling R124,820.

Tshwane police conducted a series of operations resulting in 981 arrests and the recovery of three unlicensed firearms.

These arrests come after five distinct and highly effective district operations started on Sunday August 27 and ended on September 3.

Spokesperson Johan van Dyk said these operations were carried out in the interest of public safety and with a focus on curbing crime.

Van Dyk said police arrested 26 undocumented immigrants, five people for public drinking, and one for dealing in dagga when 45 ziplock bags of dagga were found in their possession.

This operation also entailed the inspection of three liquor premises, which were found to be in contravention of the liquor act.

“These premises were subsequently closed, with 426,760 ml of liquor, fridges, and sound equipment confiscated,” Van Dyk said.

Wednesday August 30, the Moot precinct

Van Dyk said here the ops started with an inspection of liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers to enforce the liquor and secondhand goods acts.

“Three liquor premises were inspected, with one fined R3 000 for non-compliance with the Liquor Control Act (Act 2 of 2003).”

He said four second-hand goods shops were inspected, resulting in fines totalling R5 500 for non-compliance with the Secondhand Goods Act (Act 6 of 2009) being issued.

Van Dyk said Operation Shanela was executed on Thursday August 31

“Collaborative efforts of multiple stakeholders resulted in the apprehension of 29 undocumented immigrants and one person for drug dealing, with the seizure of five ziplock plastic bags.”

He said a roadblock during the operation resulted in the issuance of 248 Aarto infringement notices, totalling R108 520.

He said 2 189 people and 1 715 vehicles were searched.

“Six businesses were inspected by the Department of Labour, all found to be in compliance with labour regulations.”

Concurrently, detectives from various police stations apprehended 289 suspects wanted for various crimes, including 75 for gender-based violence.

Rietgat precinct Friday September 1.

“Three liquor premises were inspected, with one closed and liquor totalling 25,630 ml confiscated for contravention of the liquor act,” van Dyk said.

He added that four second-hand goods premises were inspected, and each was fined R2 500 for failing to comply with the Secondhand Goods Act.

Operation Shanela on Saturday afternoon led to the arrest of 325 people including 16 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 17 undocumented immigrants, 11 for public drinking, six for drug and dagga dealing with eight shopping bags of dagga, 2.5mg of nyaope, 1.6 mg of crystal meth, as well as the seizure of R220 in cash.

Van Dyk said the detectives arrested 281 suspects, including 65 for gender-based violence transgressions.

“Furthermore, 14 liquor outlets were inspected for compliance, resulting in three closures and confiscation of 86,232 ml of liquor and a gambling machine.”

This operation involved searching 1 468 individuals and 526 vehicles, leading to the issuance of 43 Aarto traffic infringement notices amounting to R16 300.

Temba precinct.

On Wednesday, August 30, police on patrol spotted a suspicious person at a spaza shop.

“The person was stopped and searched, leading to the recovery of an unlicensed firearm with a magazine and 12 rounds in his possession,” Van Dyk said.

He said the suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Also on August 30, an intelligence-driven crime operation was conducted in the Mabopane precinct.

Information was received of an unlicensed firearm at a house.

“The house was put under surveillance, and when the suspect was home, the house was visited, resulting in the discovery of a firearm with a magazine.”

He added that the suspect could not provide a reasonable explanation and was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Mamelodi East precinct

Police officers were busy with crime prevention patrols when they noticed a maroon Daewoo vehicle.

“The passenger jumped out and ran when he noticed the police.”

Van Dyk said the officers immediately searched the vehicle and found a rifle that had been stolen in Cullinan earlier in the month.

“The driver was chased and arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and further investigations are underway.”

He seized firearms will undergo ballistic analysis to determine potential involvement in other criminal activities.

Van Dyk said the success of these operations was achieved through collaboration among multiple stakeholders.

Throughout the week, a total of 3 674 people and 2 252 vehicles were searched at roadblocks, resulting in the issuance of 291 Aarto fines totalling R124 820.

Additionally, 72 undocumented immigrants were arrested.

Law enforcement inspected 23 liquor outlets, resulting in seven closures and one fined for non-compliance with the liquor act. In total, 959 949 ml of liquor was confiscated and will be disposed of.

Eight secondhand premises were inspected, with seven fines issued, totalling R15 500 for non-compliance with the Secondhand Goods Act.

The Department of Labour inspected six businesses, all of which were in compliance with labour regulations.

Major-General Azwindini Nengovhela extended his sincere appreciation and congratulations to all members who selflessly participated in these highly successful operations and contributed to the recovery of the firearms.
