Clean-up organisation receives recognition

The chairperson received the award on behalf of its members.

North of the Mountain has named best AfriForum branch for October in South Africa.

Branch chairperson Quentin Meyer said it is his dream to invest in community work for Pretoria North.

The organisation had been busy in October and travelled a total of 760km to complete sustainable and other cleaning projects in the area.

The branch garden team had several sustainable cleaning projects in Delia Street, André Street, and the corner of Azalea Road and Bokmakierie Street, as well as at the Pretoria North city hall as well as Heldeakker Cemetery.

The branch also cleans the following parks: Monumentpoort, Wolmer, Suur Klapper, Hasie, Tsessebe, Dolfyn, Hippo, and the park on Bokser Street.

AfriForum district coordinator for Greater Pretoria North Sampie Steinberg said the team picked up 2 383 refuse bags of rubbish, drove away 67 loads, and cut around 12 hectares of overgrown grass.

He added that 30 potholes were repaired and the branch also helped to repair potholes in Doornpoort.

“AfriForum will continue to clean up and take on sustainable projects to make a real difference. The hard work of this garden team sends a clear message that it is not going to wait for the metro, but instead do the work itself to stop the decay,” said Steinberg.

Meyer said the dream to establish a movement to bring Pretoria North back to its former glory was born in 2022.

“In 2022, Sampie Steinberg approached me to establish the AfriForum Noord van die Berg branch with me as chair. What an honour and dream it was.

I would like to thank my friends, family as well as the wonderful people of Pretoria North: you made my dream come true!

Lastly, I want to thank my wonderful garden team with Ebby at the helm, Alfred, Jabu, and Terence thank you guys you are the rock of the group,” he said.
