Man due in court for kidnapping, hijacking

The hijacking victim later safely returned home after being stranded in Soshanguve.

A 21-year-old man is expected to appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of car hijacking and kidnapping.

The suspect was arrested after he allegedly hijacked a 49-year-old man driving a white Isuzu bakkie on Saturday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Johan Van Dyk said: “The victim allegedly stopped at the gate, where he is working, and in the process, he was approached by two unknown gunmen, one pointed a firearm at him and forcefully pushed him into the back seat before driving off in his vehicle.

“The incident occurred at Meerkat Street in Theresa Park.”

Van Dyk added that the driver was also robbed of his items and later dropped off in Soshanguve.

“The matter was reported at Rietgat SAPS, who, supported by the Pretoria North SAPS crime prevention unit, immediately started a search for the suspects.”

He said police later received intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the suspects.

“They followed the information which led them to block A in Mabopane, and the vehicle fitting the description of the suspects was spotted and followed at high speed,” he said.

Van Dyk said the vehicle was cornered and one suspect was arrested while the other escaped on foot.

He said the arrested suspect is currently being held at Pretoria North SAPS, while the investigation continues.
