The suspects are charged with armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.
Tshwane district police apprehended six suspected Facebook Marketplace scammers and recovered two firearms in the north of Pretoria.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, these arrests resulted from the diligent efforts of members of the online intervention task team, who dedicated long hours to the investigation.
Van Dyk said the team received information about the individuals responsible for an online robbery on Tuesday, January 16.
He said the suspects allegedly held victims at gunpoint and robbed them of an undisclosed amount of money.
“The information was operationalised, and the team initiated the tracking.
Six suspects were apprehended at different locations. During the search of their residences, two concealed firearms were discovered, confiscated, and will be sent to forensic laboratories for ballistic analysis to determine involvement in other criminal activity.”
These types of online scams and robberies have been on the rise in the north of Pretoria and scores have been robbed of thousands at gunpoint.
Van Dyk said the arrested men will be charged with armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.
“The investigation will persist to ascertain if they were engaged in additional criminal activity.”
