Two neglected donkeys die despite SPCA intervention
The Tshwane SPCA is seeking help and a forever non-working home for the last remaining donkey, the only one that survived the mistreatment.
The SPCA in Tshwane is asking for assistance with a donkey that has survived severe neglect on a smallholding in the north of Pretoria.
In January, inspectors from the Tshwane SPCA received a call from a concerned community member who reported that three donkeys were allegedly being mistreated and were in dire condition.
On Tuesday, February 6, SPCA inspector Tebogo Maswanganye confirmed that two of the donkeys had died.
“I don’t even know how to feel about this,” Maswanganye told Rekord.
“Just as we thought we were going to give [the donkeys] a second chance. It’s hard to digest,” he said.
When inspectors visited the address that the community member supplied, they found three donkeys that could hardly walk.
“They had scars and one donkey was injured on the right hind leg, and bleeding,” the Tshwane SPCA said.
“There was no sign of food and water for the animals.”
Tshwane SPCA obtained a warrant to confiscate the donkeys and took them to Tshwane SPCA Waltloo for further care.
The owner was arrested by the Bedwang SAPS after a case of animal cruelty was opened at the station.
Once the donkeys arrived at the SPCA’s vet, it was confirmed that they were in a very poor condition.
It said that the donkeys’ basic needs were not met, and apart from the wounds, the donkeys showed other signs of neglect such as ringworm and mange.
“It’s really shocking to witness the level of cruelty on our animals, it is unbelievable that any person can mistreat any animal to such an extent,” said Maswanganye.
The SPCA is requesting donations of food, medication or a non-working home to adopt the surviving donkey.
“Given that they are working animals, we’d like to see if we can find this one a [non-working] forever home,” it said.
