Police fatally injure one of Gauteng’s most wanted suspects in shoot-out

The man's two accomplices were apprehended following a shoot-out in Olievenhoutbosch.

One of Gauteng’s most wanted men was shot and killed on Sunday morning in a shoot-out with police in Olievenhoutbosch.

The police also managed to arrest two accomplices following the shoot-out.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said the suspects were wanted for attempted murder, CIT robberies, ATM bombings and murder.

He said police were following up on information received about the whereabouts of the first suspect.

“Among the people that he allegedly killed was a traffic police officer who was responding to an ATM bombing in Erasmia,” he said.

Following up on the information, police kept close observation and surveillance of the suspect.

“A takedown operation consisting of the SAPS Gauteng Tactical Response Team, SAPS Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit, Johannesburg Metro Police members, Ekurhuleni Metro Police members, Vusela Intel, SRM Security and Bravallo Aeronotics was organised,” he said.

The team spotted the suspect and the two other men driving in a white Toyota Quantum and Hyundai i20 at Spin City in Olievenhoutbosch.

“As police intercepted these vehicles, the suspects started firing shots, and the police returned fire.”

The main suspect was fatally shot in the shoot-out.

His two accomplices were then arrested.

“Two firearms, with serial numbers filed off and 26 live rounds of ammunition were recovered at the scene. The two vehicles were seized.”

Masondo said upon investigation, that all three suspects were linked to ATM bombings that took place in Soweto recently.

“The firearms that were recovered will be taken for ballistic testing to determine if they were not used in the commission of other crimes.”

Gauteng’s acting provincial commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni applauded the law enforcement agency collective that worked together to apprehend the suspects believed to be involved in serious and violent crimes in the province.

“Once more, it proved that the net is closing in on criminals in Gauteng and that pulling together, we can bring crime to its minimal,” said Mthombeni.

The names or descriptions of the suspects were not disclosed at the time of publishing.
