Police are on the hunt for Hammanskraal cash-in-transit robbers

Police are conducting a wide search to net an unconfirmed number of suspects who were in cahoots in carrying out a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist near the Mandela Sports Complex in Hammanskraal at 07:45 on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
National police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said according to a preliminary report, the driver of a cash van and his two crew members were driving along Hamman Street in Hammanskraal from the N1 when they were intercepted by a group of armed suspects.
She said the suspects rammed into the van with a silver Mercedes Benz C180.
“It is alleged the suspects fired gunshots at the guards and then blew up the cash van before they fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.”
Van Wyk said the suspects reportedly fled the scene in a white Ford Ranger and police are now in search of the vehicle and the suspects.
During the incident, the CIT crew also needed to stave off community members looking to help themselves to the cash that was left scattered around after the explosion.
“Community members are warned not to find themselves on the wrong side of the law by helping themselves to money lying around or tampering with active crime scenes.”
