Tshwane metro ‘working on’ paying 55 unpaid EPWP workers
The metro says the delay in paying the workers is due to difficulties with the Tshwane metro’s payment system.
The Tshwane metro has addressed concerns regarding delayed stipend payments for Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo provided an update on the payment status of EPWP workers.
According to Mashigo, all EPWP participants are paid on pre-set dates.

However, a group of 55 EPWP workers who were contracted in January have experienced a delay in receiving their stipends.
“This delay is a result of technical difficulties with the Tshwane Payment System, which is receiving priority attention,” said Mashigo.
The Tshwane Group Human Capital Management and IT departments are implementing sustainable remedial action.
“They are working towards resolving all payment system issues that have resulted in delayed payments of EPWP participants,” said Mashigo.
The metro confirmed systems and processes are in place for the payment of EPWP workers every month.
Mashigo said scheduled communication and stakeholder engagements are sent regularly to provide updates to unpaid participants to keep them informed about ongoing efforts to resolve payment delays.
Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Barbara Creecy, took note of reports concerning the non-payment of stipends for EPWP participants across the country.
She has instructed the department’s senior management to investigate the reasons behind the delay or non-payment of the stipends.
“The investigation will involve engaging with EPWP participants to verify the accuracy of their payment information,” she said.
This verification process will develop proactive measures to address stipend payment delays and produce a verified list of unpaid participants.
