Looters helped themselves to bottles and bottles of mayonnaise on the R21 on Monday afternoon.

This comes as a truck transporting mayonnaise lost its load on the R21 just after the Atlas Road interchange on the East Rand.

It has not been confirmed whether the truck lost its load by itself or whether bystanders caused it.

In a video people can be seen picking up arms full of mayonnaise bottles from the road.

The video was posted on X by outspoken anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee.

Traffic has been affected for several hours as cleanup is underway. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use alternative routes.

No injuries have been reported.

Meanwhile, in other news, a man arrested as he ran from local security is now facing charges of attempted robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and pointing of a firearm.

Lyttelton SAPS station commander, Brigadier Michelle Toohey, extended her gratitude to all the members who were involved in the arrest, saying that street robberies were a priority crime in her precinct.

“Fidelity ADT Centurion community operations manager (COM) found the suspect behind the Alkalien veld. Upon approach, the suspect began to run,” ADT said.

Tshwane SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said that Lyttelton police arrested the man on Thursday in connection with an armed street robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
