Tshwane police detain 533 suspects in weekend operations

Tshwane police arrested 533 suspects for various crimes during a series of integrated law enforcement operations throughout the city over the weekend.
The operations were conducted in collaboration with various agencies, including home affairs, metro police and the respective CPFs under the leadership of acting Tshwane commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine.

Spokesperson Warrant-Officer Johan van Dyk said the operations involved high-visibility patrols at crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illegal liquor outlets.
He said 277 people were arrested for crimes ranging from assault and housebreaking to public drinking, driving under the influence of alcohol and armed robbery.
“Detectives arrested 226 suspects during operation Shanela in Atteridgeville,” he said.
Van Dyk said that among them, were 73 arrested for gender-based violence, one for murder, one for attempted murder, five for armed robbery, and four for rape.
“One roadblock and two tactical uniformed groups were deployed in Atteridgeville.”

He said they inspected 15 liquor premises and identified four as non-compliant with liquor regulations.
Van Dyk said liquor and a gambling machine were confiscated and will be destroyed pending the finalisation of criminal cases while one person was arrested for the possession of illegal cigarettes.
“Six people were arrested for public drinking and eight for being in the country illegally, who will be deported pending the outcome of legal proceedings.”
He said seven people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 11 premises were searched during the operation.
“In total, 780 people and 420 vehicles were searched or inspected and 33 fines worth R23 250 were issued,” he said.
