Metro says illegal dumpers will face heavy penalties

Brink also recently the metro announced that it spends over R30-million a year clearing illegal dumping.

Tshwane has recently become strong-willed in its intention to show no mercy to illegal dumpers.

Last month the metro fined an illegal dumper R15 000 for dumping alongside Rovos Rail on Paul Kruger Street, Capital Park – R5 000 for dumping and R10 000 for causing an environmental health hazard.

Wonderboom police said they caught the dumper in a white truck dumping building debris and litter around 17:00 on April 25 redhanded.

Metro police impounded the truck.

In what it calls its “zero tolerance” approach, the metro said those caught dumping illegally will face heavy fines and their vehicle will be impounded.

Mayor Cilliers Brink said: “We need to work together to keep Tshwane clean. On our part as the City and in an effort to improve our services, we have embarked on a waste management data verification project aimed at addressing waste service billing accuracy and other related matters, such as applying for additional bins.”

Brink also recently announced that the metro spends over R30-million a year clearing illegal dumpsites.

“There is no excuse for illegal dumping. The city has operational disposal sites that are accessible to the public for domestic and garden refuse, and residents are encouraged to make use of these facilities to help keep Tshwane clean,” he said.

He advised residents to apply for additional waste bins for their household if they need them.

The metro charges R407.04 per bin per month for waste collection.

“Working with metro police, and waste management and environment compliance teams, we are escalating efforts to enforce by-laws, confiscate vehicles and impose hefty fines against offenders,” Brink said.
