An ATM was bombed and a shop robbed in the early hours of the morning of Thursday, May 9, at the Sasol garage in Soshanguve Extension 2.
According to SAPS Warrant-Officer Johan Van Dyk, a group of seven men armed with handguns and rifles, arrived on the scene in a white Toyota Quantum at approximately 02:30.
He said the suspects wearing masks pretended to refuel their car, but instead held up the petrol attendant at gunpoint and ordered her to remain silent.
“Then they proceeded to the shop and ordered staff out of the shop then went to the Capitec ATM.”
Van Dyk said then a big explosion was heard.
He added that the suspects then robbed the shop, including the drop safe and ATM of an undisclosed amount of cash.
Van Dyk said a newspaper delivery driver, who was on the scene in a white Toyota bakkie, was also held up at gunpoint.
“The suspects robbed him of his firearm, wallet with an undisclosed amount of cash, bank cards, and a Hisense cellphone, as well as his firearm licence.”
He said a white Toyota Quantum parked nearby was damaged, with the windscreen and side windows shattered .
“The driver, who was sleeping inside the vehicle, escaped without injury,” said Van Dyk .
No arrest has been made and police are investigating.
