Two nabbed for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition

Police raided a property in Soshanguve after a tip off from locals about unlicensed firearms

The Rietgat SAPS recovered two unlicensed firearms and arrested two suspects in Soshanguve on Wednesday, May 8.

According to Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan Van Dyk, police received a tip-off from the community regarding illegal firearms in the area.

He said a joint tactical team was promptly assembled, comprising members from Rietgat SAPS, Soshanguve K9, and the Flying Squad.

“With the provided information in hand, the team identified a specific residence, whereupon they observed the house for a period and noticed male at the house,” said Van Dyk.

He said during an interview of the male resident, another individual arrived and claimed ownership of the house.

He said the homeowner was informed of the reason for the visit and the steps that would follow.

“A thorough search of the premises ensued, leading to the discovery of a 9mm pistol concealed within material at the rear of the property,” he said

“Subsequent to this finding, a police dog alerted officers to a concealed compartment within a wall, revealing a second 9mm pistol along with 29 rounds of ammunition.”

He said both suspects were apprehended and charged with possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

He said the seized weapons will undergo a forensic analysis to determine if they have been used in any other crime.

“Acting Tshwane district police commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine commended the team for their exemplary performance,” said Van Dyk.
