Hatfield Rotary Club raises thousands for charity

With the funds raised the club aim to procure 60 mattresses and 60 blankets for toddlers and to assist with renovations to the leaking roof at the centre.

Rotary Club of Hatfield has managed to raise close to R80 000 to help a community feeding scheme and a centre for children during its recent bowling day fundraiser at Wingate Park Country Club.

According to Carol Allais from the club, the funds were raised for community feeding scheme Kefilwe Thusano Empowerment and an early childhood development centre in Elandspoort.

Allais said with the funds raised they aim to procure 60 mattresses and 60 blankets for toddlers, and to assist with renovations to the leaking roof at the centre.

“Funds raised by the bowling day fundraiser will go towards providing mattresses for the toddlers in the ECD centre, food and other needs,” said Allais.

She said part of the ECD programme is to provide nutrition and an optimal environment for the toddlers.

“The new mattresses and blankets will replace the old and worn mattresses and blankets.”

She said sleep makes up an important part of the ECD programme.

“Now we can assist the centre with these requirements.

“The centre has grown exponentially since it opened in January 2022, starting out with 14 children and now accommodates 60 children.”

According to Allais, Rotarian Dr Karin Richter and her husband Teuns Diemont came up with the idea of a fun bowling day fundraiser for Kefilwe Thusano.

“This fun day allowed anyone to play, regardless of whether they had ever played bowling before.”

Fun was the order of the day at the fundraiser, with bowlers and veterans enjoying the day vying for the best-dresser and best team spirit awards.

She said the club has been a supporter of the Kefilwe Thusano since 2011, assisting in various ways with their monthly feeding scheme requirements.

ECD is a focus area of Rotary International and Kefilwe Thusano ECD is one of the Rotary Club of Pretoria Hatfield’s main projects.

Allais said entry for each bowling team was R2 000, including the green fees, wine and pizza.

“We also sold raffle tickets – 150 at R100 – for a hamper of alcohol as way of raising funds.”

She said various items were also donated for auction.

Allais expressed her appreciation to everyone who attended the fun day and all the generous bidders.

“Through the help of the members and everyone who attended the fun day, we managed to raise close to R80 000 in total and this will go towards the centres.”
