Red Day brings new hope to school for learners with special needs

A school for learners with special needs in Pretoria East had a busy day with games, volunteer projects and some 'boeries' for those hunger pangs.

The New Hope School in Pretoria East recently celebrated A Red Day with outdoor games, boerewors rolls and R200 000 worth of funds raised and contributions organised by property company Keller Williams Edge.

It is a special education school for learners with cerebral palsy, physical and learning disability.

Member of the governing body, parent Annelize Lategan, said during the celebrations that the projects tackled during the Red Day by agents and teams of the company included the construction of shade nets, painting of plant pots and frames of windows, as well as the installation of a large chalkboard.

“The support encourages us that the community is on our side and that we are not alone in wanting to give our children opportunities,” said Lategan.

Karen Meyer, marketing manager of the school, said all the sponsors of the event and teams of property agents as well as the organisers of sport and games, are “angels straight out of heaven.”

Meyer said the school would soon launch two big fundraising projects soon with a day of bowls at a bowling round in the Moot and a golf day.

She hoped these will be supported as well as the Red Day was.

A focus wall at the play area was decorated with artwork with the same theme as urban wall art painter Banksy’s recent work.

Juanita Huisamen from the property company explaied that the theme of Banksy’s recent art work was a little girl carrying a red balloon, carrying a message of hope.

“We thought that for The Red Day this would be an appropriate theme fitting in with the school’s name and ethos of inspiring learners, staff and parents to always carry on with hope in their hearts,” said Huisamen.

“I also believe there is always hope and this project proves as much.”
