TUT student dies in apparent Fresher’s Ball stampede

The alleged stampede happened on Friday during an event at the university's main campus in Pretoria.

A 20-year-old TUT student died after an apparent stampede on Friday night (May 10) at the university’s main campus in Pretoria.

According to TUT spokesperson Phaphama Tshisikhawe, the university was mourning the passing of Carol Mabunda.

It is alleged that Mabunda had sustained injuries leading to her death at the Fresher’s Ball on Friday.

Mabunda was a second-year student doing a national diploma in contact administration.

She was also a member of the EFF student council TUT Rand.

The exact details surrounding the incident are unclear at this stage and are subject to a police investigation.

Tshisikhawe said the university was saddened by Mabunda’s untimely passing.

“While we await an official report from the South African Police Services, the university is providing the student’s family and friends with as much support as we can at this difficult time.”

EFFSC TUT Rand chairman Albert Mahlalela described Mabunda as a person who lived her life peacefully and full of dedication.
