Mams dad unhappy about how drowning of son was handled 14 years ago
The families demanded justice for the two boys because no one was held accountable, between the security guards who had left their posts and the supervisor, who is responsible for the resort.
The Tshwane metro remains sympathetic to the families that lost two boys in a Moretele Park Resort drowning in Mamelodi 14 years ago.
This came after the family of one of the two boys expressed their disappointment at how the case was concluded.
The two boys, Mongezi Monyai (5) and his friend Lungelo Thwala (8), gained access to the resort for a swim on August 21, 2010.
Vincent Monyai (57) of Mamelodi West Section D1 claimed more could have been done to ensure the boys were safe and the tragedy that befell them avoided.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said Tshwane is aware of the incident.
Mashigo said it was quite a sensitive matter, and the city remained sympathetic to the families of the two children.
“The children trespassed to gain access to the pool through the back fence, and it was off season around winter; all swimming pools are closed,” said Mashigo.
The gates were also locked and no people were allowed inside the swimming pool yard.
Monyai demanded justice for the two boys, because no one was held accountable.
“The children entered the resort because no one was at the gate, and the swimming pool area was supposed to be closed too.”
He said the guards who were on duty had allegedly left their post.
Mashigo said it is true that there were only two security guards who oversaw the safety of the entire facility on August 23, 2010.
There was a Women’s Day event in the community hall at Moretele Park.
“The security guards were notified by neighbours about the kids accessing the back fence. The security guards found the two boys drowning in the swimming pool,” said Mashigo.
The police were called to attend to the incident.
“My son’s soul is not resting because he comes into my dreams, demanding justice ever since the incident occurred 14 years ago,” Monyai said.
He pleaded with the police to reopen the case.
“We are not satisfied with how the police handled it.”
Monyai said Mamelodi West police initially investigated an inquest however he was shocked when hr learned on July 2, 2015 that the case had been dropped.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, said an inquest was investigated.
“The court closed the investigation and concluded that the cause of death was drowning,” said Van Dyk.
He said the family should take it up with the owners of the facility.
