SA to take hands with Azerbaijan on climate change summit

Azerbaijan will be hosting the COP29 later this year.

The chargé d’affaires of the Republic of Azerbaijan in South Africa, Zaur Shukurov, said at a garden reception marking the country’s Independence Day in Waterkloof, Pretoria that the country is ready to join hands with South Africa on combatting climate change.

The glamorous event, attended by representatives from embassies such as that of Cuba, Russia and Mauritius as well as members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora, commemorated the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on May 28, 2018.

Shukurov said the annual event celebrates this historic day. “It marked the restoration of Azerbaijan’s statehood,” said Shukurov.

He explained to the crowd of more than 50 guests that Azerbaijan was the first republic in the entire Muslim world.

Shukurov referred to 2024 as being a Year of Solidarity for a Green World and said his country will be hosting the important United Nations Convention on Climate Change, COP29.

The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference or more commonly known as COP29, will be the 29th United Nations Climate Change conference. COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11-22. Mukhtar Babayev will preside over COP29.

Babayev is an Azerbaijani politician who is the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He has worked in various roles for the Azerbaijan state-owned oil company since the 1990s.

He stressed that his country is looking forward to welcoming a South African delegation at this important event.

“We are a leader in green energy and can share much information, initiatives and technology with South Africa on growth in this area,” reiterated Shukurov.

South Africa and Azerbaijan signed a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration on several projects in 2014.

The reception was attended by the deputy director-general of the Pretoria office of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Maud Dlomo, as guest of honour.

Dlomo explained that the countries at present are working together on exchanging skills in petroleum technology.

“We appreciate the alignment with Azerbaijan on many fronts and I am looking forward to joining the climate talks. South Africa’s climate change policy and strategy of the Just Transition can benefit from the Convention.”
