Meerkats stand tall in Pretoria east
At the Meerkat Programme, the youth learn leadership and survival skills and to always be an example of a lawful citizen.
The 8th St Albans scout group in Pretoria east invested their first Meerkats, a Scout category for ages four to five on Friday, May 31 at the unit’s hall in Groenkloof.
The four members are Nolitha Moremedi, Raghav Mulamatthatil, Siyabonga Nyembu and Kuena Mosola.
Group spokesperson Hetta Botes said the Meerkats are for four to seven-year-olds worldwide and launched about a year ago.
“This prestigious moment in the movement is the start of the child’s scout journey up until the age of 18,” said Botes.
She explained in a country where adequate education is lacking, the management of the movement identified the necessity for a programme to address the developmental needs of younger children.
The Meerkat Programme has been developed to help meet these needs.
Early childhood education is inextricably linked to how children will perform as adults, largely because early learning builds the foundation for later success.
SCOUTS South Africa strives to prepare its members to overcome life’s challenges and to succeed as skilled, confident and productive members of society.
She explained the unit does community work and invests much to teach the youth advanced leadership skills, survival skills, how to be strong, brave, independent, disciplined and most importantly, lawful citizens.
“We want them to be an example to all around them and the next generation to do the right thing at the right time. It’s a member’s duty to help others, be kind, be lawful and always do his or her best,” said Botes.
She said this is a huge milestone for Pretoria east as a community.
“We would like to invite all young boys and girls to join the movement, become Meerkats and assist in making our city and country a better place. We teach our children to be responsible citizens and be an example to others,” said Botes, who is also mother to a scout.
