Stoepmark commemorates Knit in Public Day
Over 90 knitters and crocheters took part in the event.

Knotty Habit commemorated Worldwide Knit In Public Day with 95 knitters and crocheters at Ouma Issie’s Tea Garden in Irene, Centurion this past weekend.
Knitters and crocheters from all walks of life came together to commemorate the knitting holiday that started in 2005 and remains to this day the largest knitting event in the world, with multiple countries taking part.
Miensie Van Zyl, the owner of Knotty Habit, says they recoined the day to include crocheters and that it is the second year that Knotty Habit has hosted Worldwide Knit In Public Day in Irene.
“I just feel we need the recognition as there are so many wonderful knitters and crocheters in this country, it’s a huge industry, and it’s always been part of South African culture. Even here at Ouma Issie’s, she was known to be a knitter, there are pictures of her knitting at the museum,” she said.
Van Zyl registered the Knotty Habit’s Worldwide Knit In Public Day herself which included South Africa as one of the participating countries along with Brazil, Ecuador, the United States, the Falkland Islands, Mexico, Australia and many others.
Owner of Colours of Amalfi Yarn, Marietjie Van Der Merwe, said the day was important to recognise as the modern age has forgotten the old crafts and it’s important to get back to that in these times.
“It keeps your head sane. With all these problems that you have, it helps to just sit, focus and knit and forget about it all,” Van Der Merwe said.
