The Reeds Parkrun hosts its 86th fun run

The Reeds Parkrun has been offering locals a pet-friendly 5km run/walk in Centurion every Saturday since 2022.

Dozens of Centurion runners didn’t let a little cold weather deter them from participating in the weekly Reeds Parkrun this past weekend.

The Reeds Parkrun has been offering locals a pet-friendly 5km run/walk in Centurion every Saturday since 2022 and this past June 8 was its 86th 5km fun run.

One of the event co-ordinators, Clem Manoko says that the initiative started as a community run that discouraged illegal dumping around the area, which locals say is a massive issue.

“I think one, it’s about community building, we’re building a sense of community and belonging here. As a resident here, it discourages any potential squatter camps or settlers from inviting themselves. It also discourages dumping. I think that dumping is the worst problem that we have here.

“And of course, promoting exercising and a healthy lifestyle,” Manoko said.

The Reeds Parkrun volunteers also conduct clean-ups every second month. Along Kolgans Road where the parkruns are hosted, the group plants and takes care of gardens as the area is known for illegal dumping among locals.

“The city is supposed to clean here but we don’t see them often so the community is doing it themselves. There was a dumping site just at the junction of Kestrel and Kolgans and now, it’s a beautiful garden for example,” Manoko said.

The parkrun has hosted visitors from international locations such as the UK and Australia and Manoko says she intends to keep attracting residents to get out of their houses, know their neighbours and get active.
