Central homeless residents get helping hand to get through winter
On June 15, the partners set up the drive on the corner of Edmond Street and Nelson Mandela Drive where they distributed food, clothes, sanitary pads and offered free haircuts.
The Waratwa Foundation and partnering organisations recently held a winter drive in the CBD to assist local homeless people to get by during the cold season.
On June 15, the partners distributed food, clothes, sanitary pads and even offered free haircuts to the homeless on the corner of Edmond Street and Nelson Mandela Drive.
The Waratwa foundation founded by Oratile Motsusi collaborated with Nkosinathi Mahlangu’s Blaze Topix Foundation in hosting the drive, the second that they’ve held.
“The aim was to provide for the homeless and those in need. We offered some warm samp and stew, along with some fruit as well as bottled water. We also donated warm clothes, shoes and sanitary pads as well as other toiletry items,” Motsusi said.
The foundations also worked with the TMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit in the effort as well. TMPD representative, Constable Ntidimatseng Mickey Sedibe, spoke to the homeless and offered services for rehabilitation.
“One of the men in the crowd was severely injured, and with the help of Sergeant Mothupi of the TMPD, an ambulance was called and he was immediately helped. We continue to extend our gratitude to the TMPD,” Motsusi said.

Motsusi also thanked local pastor Xolani Gule, who led the day’s devotion and prayer, as well as the Classic Cuts Barbershop, Nakar barber shop and Tinti’s barber’s for giving haircuts to the homeless people.
“We would like to thank the other partners involved which are Mr Space, the local taxi association, BAFS Cheeky Chilly and other supporters, as well as the volunteers and photographers from the Blaze Topix Foundation who helped extensively. We also thank the Miss Humanitarian finalist Khanyisa Malobola and Yemurai Nyangu, the semi-finalist for Miss Teen Universe South Africa, and Pageant creative director, Thabang Ntuli,” Motsusi said.
In February, the foundation visited the Halaletsang Child and Youth Care Centre in Atteridgeville, where it donated clothes, shoes, sanitary pads and groceries.
