Pretoria West Crematorium to be completed by December

The crematorium was last active in June last year and was scheduled for completion at the end of 2023.

Refurbishments of the Pretoria West Rebecca Street Crematorium are expected to be completed in December this year, according to Tshwane Deputy Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya.

Moya said she recently took political oversight over the delayed refurbishments of the crematorium after concerns were raised by communities on Friday, June 14.

The crematorium was last active in June last year and the renovations were scheduled for completion at the end of 2023 but there were delays.

“Tshwane is cognisant of the fact that the crematorium is the only municipal-run entity in Tshwane and its non-operation means that residents have to travel to bordering municipalities for this valued service. We apologise for the prolonged delays,” Moya said.

She said a service provider had been appointed to oversee the remainder of the project and that funds would be allocated for the new 2024/25 financial year. R1.2-million will help fund gas provision and R150 000 for regular maintenance of the crematorium.

This provider has been able to attend to repairs on the mechanical sections for drying out and testing the equipment stacker.

There is also commissioning underway for a burner of the second machine and the service provider has also installed new software.

“A tender for a three-year deal for the provision of gas has been approved by the city’s Bid Adjudication Committee. I will continue to provide regular updates on the progress of the restoration of the crematorium,” Moya said.

The metro indicated last year that the furnaces needed thorough maintenance to meet environmental compliance standards and requirements for the facility.

Being the only crematory owned by the metro in all of Tshwane, Rebecca Street is a common choice for people who require the service. The closure has especially inconvenienced members of the Hindu faith, as well as other residents in the area.

The crematorium offers the following:

– Cremation service
– Reopening of a grave for burial of ashes
– Placement of ashes in the wall of remembrance or ash berm
– Tombstone applications.
