Local district prosecutor granted bail following corruption charges
Prosecutor Ignacia Koketso Mahlakwane (31) was released on R5 000 bail and will return to court on August 28.
The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday, June 28 granted bail to a Tshwane district prosecutor following corruption charges.
Ignacia Koketso Mahlakwane (31), a district prosecutor based at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, was released on R5 000 bail.
She is facing charges of corruption, extortion and obstructing the administration of justice.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority(NPA), Mahlakwane was arrested early last week and will return to court on August 28.
NPA Gauteng regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said it is alleged that on July 6, 2023, Mahlakwane accepted gratification of an amount between R70 000 and R80 000.
Mahanjana said with the money it is alleged that Mahlakwane and her accomplice were to decline to prosecute a case of a man who was appearing before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court for a charge of assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm.
“After the man, who is now the complainant in the matter, refused to pay the requested amount, on October 24, 2023, Mahlakwane, acting in common purpose with her accomplice, issued a J175 summons for the man to appear in court C at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.”
Mahanjana said the complainant then reported the matter to police.
“After investigations by the National Anti-Corruption Detectives Unit, Mahlakwane was arrested on June 26 at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court,” she said.
Mahanjana said after an unopposed bail application, the matter was postponed to August 28 for further investigation.
She said the NPA is committed to fighting corruption at all levels, including within its own ranks.
