Wierdabrug SAPS trauma unit gets facelift

A local church partnered up with counter-human-trafficking organisation Brave to Love to give the station’s trauma unit a facelift.

The trauma centre at Wierdabrug police station now offers a safe and welcoming space for victims of violence and other trauma after some much-needed care on Saturday, July 13.

Ruan Kriek from Lewende Woord Midrand, which is based in Centurion, said that the day was a success as they joined forces with Brave to Love.

Brave to Love is a counter-human-trafficking organisation based in Centurion that actively works to combat human trafficking in South Africa.

Brave to Love is close to our hearts as we serve side-by-side in the community,” Kriek told Rekord.

He explained that as part of the international initiative, Serve Day, the church did various projects including outreaches at Waterkloof Marina, a local school for disabled learners, and Irene Homes.

At Wierdabrug police station, the teams came together to clean, revamp, and stock the facility with much-needed items.

“We ministered to the staff here and helped them with the trauma room so that it will be a nicer space for someone who has had a horrible experience,” said Kriek.

“The outreach meant so much for the police, especially for the trauma unit.

The teams from Lewende Woord Midrand and Brave To Love did an amazing job on the site .”

Brandon Young, academic administrator at Brave to Love, said that the project was an important one to support the police.

“The police really do a lot for the community, but they don’t get the support and resources that they need, unfortunately.

It can’t only come from one side, the police work hard to protect the community, we need to work with the police,” said Young.

He said that the community had donated items and funds to not only renovate the centre but also provide trauma kits to the unit.

The kits include various items that those who have experienced trauma might need in case they need to spend a night in a place of safety.

“We also wanted to think about the children, so we could have a place that they could do play therapy or something like that, and interact with them in a comforting environment.”

The care put into the unit builds on work by other community members in October 2023 when the first upgrades to the unit took place.
