East hospice remains operational, calls for donations in wake of recent fire
The source of the fire that broke out in one of the hospice’s containers is still unknown.
Residents are encouraged to assist the Sun Gardens Hospice with donations after a fire broke out at the Lynnwood-based healthcare centre in the east of Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon, July 16.
The Tshwane fire department quickly contained the blaze, further ensuring no injuries at the centre.
Acting Tshwane Emergency Department spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni said the incident occurred around 15:20.
“Two fire trucks, along with the safety officer from the fire department, were dispatched to the scene.
“Their prompt action was crucial in controlling the fire and preventing it from spreading to other parts of the hospice,” he said.
Mnguni said the cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and the situation was stabilised, with no injuries.
“The fire has been brought under control and our teams are set to assess the affected area to conduct the analysis of the damage,” he said.
Pieter van Heerden from the hospice told Rekord the facilities are still running, as the fire didn’t cause extensive damage.
He said the fire occurred in one of their containers and they still have no idea what caused it.
“Our facilities are still running and we appreciate every support we receive from residents,” said Van Heerden.
Van Heerden said the hospice can still trade and residents are welcome to bring in donations.
It accepts all household goods, furniture, clothing, books, electrical ware, craft and hobby materials, as well as linen and toys.
However, it does not allow donations of medicines or harmful substances.
“Residents are allowed to bring any kind of donations and we would gladly accept them,” Van Heerden said.
