Former Sassa worker convicted for disability grant fraud
The woman was arrested in March 2023 after approving the fraudulent grants for her boyfriend between July 2009 and May 2018.

A 42-year-old former employee of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has been convicted and sentenced for disability grant fraud.
The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court delivered the verdict on July 26.
Portia Mathenjwa was found guilty of 108 counts of fraud, which occurred between 2009 and 2018.
According to Captain Lloyd Ramovha, Mthenjwa had approved disability grants for her alleged boyfriend during her tenure at the agency.
Ramovha said the case was registered at the Mamelodi police station in June 2020 and investigated by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime unit.
“She was arrested on March 30, 2023,” said Ramovha.
The court sentenced Mathenjwa to three years’ imprisonment, which was wholly suspended for five years on the condition that she is not convicted of fraud or theft during the suspension period.
