Wollies urges residents to adopt a pet
The shelter remains eager to help all animals, despite reaching its full capacity.
An animal shelter in the north of Pretoria is requesting the public to consider taking a furry friend home.
Wollies Animal Shelter is at full capacity, so has urged residents to adopt an animal.
According to the shelter’s Cilla Trexler, the public’s previous food donations assisted with the financial implications of caring for a large group of animals, however in recent months, feeding the animals had been tough.
“To feed the dogs, we use five of the municipal bins [of food] per day and for cats, it’s one and a half.
“We don’t have a preference of food that someone can donate, because we mix all the items we get, people are more than welcome to donate any food, as long as it is in the best interest of these wonderful pets,” she said.
“We managed to sterilise 117 animals, 40 dogs were adopted, 49 dogs were given up, 49 dogs were found, and 14 dogs were returned to their owners, which is a good number for us.
“The issue is that when an animal stays longer than seven days, we have to sterilise it and take it to the vet and that requires finances.
“We have a sterilisation project every Tuesday, when a doctor comes in and checks all the animals and provides medication for them.”
She said the shelter also does microchipping.
Trexler thanked the public for believing and trusting in the shelter and urged volunteers to come walk a dog, especially over the weekend.
“We appreciate the support that residents give us and we try our best to do the best for these animals that are in our care,” she said.
