Community comes together for school’s potjiekos celebration
Learners of Pierre van Ryneveld Private School were divided into groups and had to come up with a theme for their potjies and find someone to make them.
Pierre van Ryneveld Private School hosted its first-ever Potjiekos competition fun day on Saturday, August 3.
It was held at 14 Baltimore Road, directly behind the school, and aimed to unite learners, parents, friends, and the community for a day of celebration and fun.
School administrator, Gerhard Venter, said learners from different classes were divided into groups, where they were each tasked to decide on their themes and find someone who would make their potjie for them.
Venter said the groups then had to present their potjies to a panel of judges who evaluated them based on taste, appearance and presentation.
“Local musician Pedro Bardosa was one of the judges who helped us decide on the best potjie.”
He said 17 potjies were made and presented, while prizes were awarded for the best potjie, poster, theme and team spirit.
Venter said the winning group received a stainless steel braai and a floating trophy, while second and third prize winners received aprons, braai tools and a coffee basket.
“The event also featured a jumping castle where the youngsters could play, and at the end of the competition, learners sold their potjies at low prices so they wouldn’t go to waste.”
He added that it was important to have the community’s involvement in the competition so they were made aware of the school’s presence in the area.
