Irene community comes together for a Christmas in July Ball

Funds raised will contribute to maintaining and caring for the neighbourhood.

Irene residents and businesses came together for a Christmas in July Ball to raise funds to look after their community.

Guests gathered at Irene Country Club on July 27 for a dinner and dance.

The evening included a special visit from Santa, while an auction for charity and funds raised by the event reached over R100 000.

Bas Basson from Bastion House said that the evening was a roaring success, and not only brought in the funds to make the project possible but brought the community closer together.

The guests enjoyed an evening, which included an auction, and a dance demonstration by Dance Equation Studio.

Basson said the neighbourhood was proud to be a heritage area with a close-knit community that looked out for each other.

He said that Irene residents were not new to working for their community with many projects that residents have initiated.

A resident looks after the public park garden is maintained and the Irene Landowners Association (ILA) has done some initiatives like caring for the cemetery through an Adopt-a-Spot initiative.

“The community came together to decide what needs to be done to look after our people. Businesses put their hands up to see how they could make a difference,” said Basson.

ILA thanked Bastion House for hosting the event, the sponsors for their valuable support, and the members for their enthusiasm.

“Last night’s event was a resounding success, and we’re thrilled to say that the impact of [their] contributions will be visible in our streets.”

The Irene suburb dates back to 1902, with infrastructure maintenance being an ongoing and important issue.

The ILA, formed in 2000, understands the needs of the community and decided to actively work to keep the area clean, safe, and maintained.

With the fundraiser, the ILA targeted some older elements in need of care, such as street names, pavements, roads, and traffic signs.

The group previously raised almost R500 000 to repair road subsidence that had led to the closure of the M18 Main Road in April 2023.
