Pretoria’s 2023 Best University reflects on achievement

The University of Pretoria took the top spot in their category last year as it looks forward to its prosperous future.

The Best of Pretoria Readers’ Choice Awards are back again with voting now open.

This is your chance to pick your cream of the crop across several categories including Living in Pretoria.

Voted Best University in 2023, the University of Pretoria (UP) remembers last year’s achievement as an honour and a source of pride for the historic institution.

“This recognition has further cemented our reputation as a leading institution in the region,” says UP interim Vice Chancellor, Prof Themba Mosia.

“Being recognised by the Pretoria community through the Readers’ Choice Awards is a profound honour for the University of Pretoria. It affirms our efforts to provide high-quality education and contribute positively to society.”

He said that the results are a testament to the trust and confidence that students, parents, and stakeholders place in the institution.

UP contributes to the local scene by providing quality higher education, thought leadership and provides solutions to societal issues.

The university is proud that it can play a role in fostering an environment of mutual growth and support in the Capital City.

“As a leading university in engaging communities, many projects are undertaken by our students in communities in addition to other substantive academic engagement projects,” explains Mosia.

UP undertakes contract research for the government departments, businesses and other research organisations in Pretoria and the surrounding regions.

The university is entrenched in the history of the city, celebrating its diverse culture, heritage, and beautiful natural surroundings.

“The jacaranda-lined streets provide a picturesque setting that inspires our academic community.

Additionally, the cultural diversity within Pretoria enriches our campus life, creating a melting pot of ideas and perspectives that drive innovation and inclusivity.”

Mosia says that UP’s recipe for success is to consistently deliver excellence and engage meaningfully with the community.

“The positive impact you make on the lives of those you serve will earn you their votes and loyalty.”

For its part, UP is working on its sustainable development goals about People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnerships.

Apart from the honour of winning Best University last year, UP was also ranked 42nd globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings in 2024.

“Our advice for businesses in the city is to actively adapt their business practices to contribute to a cleaner environment and form partnerships to make a positive difference in the lives of people.”

Recognition as Pretoria’s Best University in 2023 not only boosted morale but also encouraged a standard of quality that benefits the entire community.

“Being a participant in the Readers’ Choice Awards is vital as it empowers residents to acknowledge and celebrate local excellence.”

Don’t miss your chance to make your mark this year by voting for your Best before September 6.
