Metro police score on illegal parking in CBD

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) have impounded 1 000 vehicles in just one month in the Pretoria CBD alone.

MMC for Community Safety Grandi Theunissen revealed this on August 12 as he urged motorists to use legal parking bays.

Vehicles are being impounded as part of a campaign against illegal parking.

Theunissen said one of the most notable outcomes has been the considerable increase in income generation for Tshwane from impounded vehicles.

He said in July alone, the TMPD impounded 917 vehicles as compared to 270 and 357 in May and June respectively, leading to an increased revenue of R2-million for July.

“Additional storage fees are levied against all impounded vehicles that are not immediately collected by their owner, thus contributing to increased revenue,” said Theunissen.

He said that there has also been a marked decrease in complaints regarding the conduct of officials at the pound.

Theunissen said this reduction in grievances reflects the positive impact of the TMPD’s focus on accountability, transparency and professionalism.

“By fostering a culture of responsibility and high standards among staff, the pound now operates with greater integrity,” he said.

He urged motorists not to park in loading zones, bus lanes and no-parking areas.

He also warned them not to listen to informal car guards who might attempt to have them park in these spots regardless, as they are quick to disappear once the TMPD tow truck arrives.

Theunissen advised motorists who suspect that their vehicle has been towed to call the TMPD pound on 012 358 5917 or the regional control room on 012 358 1906.

He stated that the TMPD pound is located on 1 Madiba Street in Pretoria Central and is operational daily between 06:15 and 18:15.

“It’s important to note that payment for towed vehicles cannot be made at the pound,” he said.

Theunissen further cautioned motorists to visit the TMPD offices at 11 Francis Baard Street in Pretoria Central to make a payment, whereafter they can collect their vehicle at the pound with their proof of payment.

“These pay points are also operational daily between 06:15 and 18:15.”
